Federal Regulatory Impact on Southeastern Fishing Crews and Processor Employees

Project Summary

A question that arises for both federal regulators and fishing communities is the impact that federal fisheries regulations have on those working in the fishing industry. In order to address this issue, we are conducting a regional study with fishing crews and processor employees to measure the well-being of those working in the fishing community, and understand how regulation impacts the employment and well-being of those individuals in the industry.

While this topic is of academic interest, it is of immediate significance to the Fishery Management Council. The council is required to use economic and social data in fishery management decisions and unfortunately, data is not readily available at a useful scale for the Southeastern United States.

The purpose of this pilot project is to develop research and analysis methods that will allow a rapid roll out of subsequent research across the region.
